However, caution may still be required for prolonged stays in the water, as extended exposure can cause discomfort. This is a suitable temperature range for short swims and for those accustomed to cooler water. For more comfortable swimming, it is recommended to use proper gear. It is important to note that these swimming tips and recommendations apply only in good weather. When the air temperature is below 68°F (20°C), and sometimes even below 77°F (25°C), swimming can be unpleasant even with relatively high water temperatures.

Lake Puula is a large, deep, and complex lake system in the South Savo region, renowned for its labyrinthine shoreline and thousands of islands. Swimming is freely permitted along its extensive shores and at any accessible local spots, a right safeguarded by Finland's Everyman’s Rights. This principle ensures the public's widespread freedom to access and use natural waters for recreation without needing explicit permission. The lake's water quality is generally very good, typical of the Finnish Lakeland, providing excellent conditions for bathing. Designated public beaches have their water quality and safety regularly monitored by local authorities.
As a large, deep inland lake, Puula experiences significant seasonal temperature differences. During the cold winter, typically from December to April, the lake is reliably covered by a thick ice layer, and the water temperature below the surface remains consistently near freezing, generally between 0∘C and 4∘C. The most comfortable period for swimming in the surface layer is short, peaking in July. During this mid-summer month, surface temperatures in the sun-warmed bays and shallower nearshore areas typically range from 18∘C to 21∘C. However, due to the lake’s size and depth, the water temperature in the open basin often remains slightly cooler. Outside of the warm summer peak, the water is too cold for casual bathers.
