Location & Local Information
Lake Unnukka, located in South Savo in eastern Finland, is part of the Saimaa lake system and lies near the towns of Varkaus and Leppävirta. It is a long and branching lake surrounded by forested hills and rocky shores, with clear and clean water typical of the region. The water temperature in Unnukka changes markedly with the seasons. After the ice melts in late April or early May, the surface temperature is around 4–7 °C (39–45 °F). During early summer, it rises to about 13–16 °C (55–61 °F), and in July, the warmest month, it usually reaches 18–22 °C (64–72 °F). In shallow and sheltered bays, the water can briefly exceed 23 °C (73 °F). By late September, it cools below 10 °C (50 °F), and freezing typically occurs again in November.
Swimming in Lake Unnukka is allowed and widely enjoyed in summer. The water is clean and safe, and many public beaches and natural shores provide easy access for swimming. Calm water and scenic surroundings make the lake a pleasant place for both relaxation and outdoor activities.
