Location & Local Information
Lake Rikkavesi, located in North Savo in eastern Finland, is a large and clean freshwater lake that connects with other nearby lakes through narrow channels, forming part of the Vuoksi water system. The lake’s moderate depth and relatively sheltered position allow it to warm well during summer while still staying cool in deeper areas. In spring, after the ice melts in late April or early May, the surface water temperature is around 5–8 °C (41–46 °F). During early summer, it rises to 14–17 °C (57–63 °F), and in July, the warmest month, Rikkavesi typically reaches 18–21 °C (64–70 °F). On hot days, shallow shores may briefly reach 22–23 °C (72–73 °F). By late September, the water cools below 10 °C (50 °F), and the lake freezes again in November.
