Fewston Reservoir in the Washburn Valley stays noticeably cool through the year. Typical surface temperatures range from about 2–6 °C (36–43 °F) in winter, 6–12 °C (43–54 °F) in spring, and roughly 12–18 °C (54–64 °F) in summer on warmer days, falling back to around 6–12 °C (43–54 °F) in autumn. Wind, depth and shading from the valley mean the water can feel several degrees colder than air temperatures, and thermal stratification can produce colder layers below the surface.
Swimming is generally not recommended at Fewston. The reservoir is part of the public water supply and the landowner and water company advise against open-water bathing because of cold water shock, underwater hazards, and potential impacts on water quality; some locations also carry signage restricting access. Visitors instead use waymarked walks around Fewston and neighbouring Swinsty Reservoir, enjoy birdwatching in the Washburn Valley, or travel a short distance to Harrogate for townsfolk amenities and formal swimming facilities.
