Winterburn Reservoir, set in the western edge of the Yorkshire Dales, tends to be cool year‑round. Surface temperatures in summer typically reach about 12–18 °C (54–64 °F) on average, occasionally climbing into the high teens during warm spells. Spring and autumn waters generally sit between 4–14 °C (39–57 °F) as the reservoir moves between seasonal mixing and cooling. In winter the water can be close to freezing, commonly around 0–6 °C (32–43 °F), especially below the surface where temperatures remain lowest.
Swimming at Winterburn is not officially permitted and is widely discouraged because it is a working reservoir used for water supply and has safety risks. Access restrictions aim to protect water quality and public safety; steep banks, sudden depth changes, submerged structures and the danger of cold‑water shock make unsupervised bathing hazardous. Visitors looking for water activities are better served by nearby lidos or organised wild‑swimming meets. The area remains attractive for walking, cycling and birdwatching, with traditional Dales villages such as Grassington and extensive moorland scenery close by.
