Scar House Reservoir, high in Nidderdale, typically has cold water throughout the year. Surface temperatures commonly range by season: winter about 1–6 °C (34–43 °F), spring 4–10 °C (39–50 °F), summer 10–18 °C (50–64 °F) on the warmest days, and autumn 6–12 °C (43–54 °F). Deeper water remains colder than the surface and short spells of warm weather can raise only the upper layers. Wind, rainfall and reservoir release patterns also produce frequent short-term variations in temperature.
Swimming at Scar House is generally not permitted and is discouraged for safety and water-quality reasons. The reservoir forms part of the local drinking-water system and is managed to protect supplies; steep banks, sudden depth changes, cold water shock and lack of lifeguards add real hazards. Visitors who want to swim should follow signage, use formal facilities or organised open-water events elsewhere.
