** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
#North Yorkshire
Embsay Reservoir, set above the village of Embsay in North Yorkshire, holds cool, often brisk water typical of upland reservoirs. Seasonal surface temperatures commonly sit around 2–6 °C (36–43 °F) in winter, rise to roughly 6–12 °C (43–54 °F) through spring, and reach about 12–18 °C (54–64 °F) in a warm summer, occasionally nudging toward 20 °C (68 °F) in heatwaves. In autumn the water generally cools back into the 6–12 °C (43–54 °F) band. These figures are approximate; depth, weather and time of day all influence actual temperatures and colder thermoclines can appear even in summer.
Swimming at Embsay Reservoir is not formally encouraged because it is a working reservoir with safety hazards such as cold shock risk, submerged structures and steep banks, and there are concerns about water quality and rescue access. Some people do take unsupervised dips in warmer months, but this is at individual risk and often discouraged by local authorities. The area remains attractive for walkers, anglers and photographers, and is close to the Embsay and Bolton Abbey Steam Railway, the Bolton Abbey estate, and the historic market town of Skipton.
