** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Bandak, a large lake in Telemark County, typically shows clear seasonal variations in surface temperature. In midsummer (June–August) the top layer commonly warms to about 15–20 °C (59–68 °F), and on very warm days can briefly reach around 22 °C (72 °F). During spring (April–May) surface temperatures are usually low, roughly 2–10 °C (36–50 °F) as ice melts and the water stratifies, while autumn (September–October) sees cooling to approximately 5–15 °C (41–59 °F). In winter the lake is near freezing and can be ice-covered; surface temperatures then sit close to 0–4 °C (32–39 °F). Because Bandak is relatively deep, temperatures drop quickly with depth and colder water persists below the warm surface layer.
Swimming in Bandak is generally allowed and common in the warmer months, as Norway’s shoreline access and local recreational culture encourage bathing and boating. The lake’s water quality is typically good, making summer swims pleasant for those prepared for moderate temperatures. Caution is wise: sudden weather, cold water shock, deep sections, and boat traffic can create hazards, and winter ice swimming requires experience, safety measures and local knowledge. Lifesaving services are limited in remote spots, so swimmers should choose sheltered bathing areas, use flotation aids if unsure, and respect seasonal conditions.
