Møsvatn is a highland reservoir in Telemark County whose water temperature varies strongly with season and weather. In winter the lake is usually at or just below freezing and often ice‑covered, around 0 °C (32 °F). During spring, temperatures rise slowly as snowmelt continues to feed the lake, commonly ranging from about 1–8 °C (34–46 °F). In the warmest summer weeks surface temperatures can reach roughly 10–18 °C (50–64 °F) in sheltered, shallow bays, though the deeper and more exposed parts of the reservoir remain markedly colder. In autumn the water typically cools back toward 4–12 °C (39–54 °F) as air temperatures fall and inflow increases.
Swimming in Møsvatn is physically possible and not generally prohibited, but conditions require caution. As a regulated reservoir influenced by snowmelt and hydroelectric operations, water levels and currents can change quickly and cold, deep water presents a real risk of cold shock and hypothermia even in summer. Sheltered shallow bays are the most suitable places to enter the water, and visitors should assess weather, water clarity and local activity such as boating before swimming. Ice cover in winter makes access hazardous except for experienced ice swimmers with proper safety measures.
