Water Temperature: Daily Trends, Historical Records, and Forecast
❌ As of today, the minimum water temperature ranges from 47°F (8°C) to 50°F (10°C). This is still cool water, suitable only for experienced swimmers or those accustomed to cold water. Swimming in such conditions is possible, but not recommended for prolonged periods. Extra caution should be taken during extended exposure, as the cold water can cause heat loss and lead to hypothermia. For added comfort, special clothing can be used. It is important to note that these swimming tips and recommendations apply only in good weather. When the air temperature is below 68°F (20°C), and sometimes even below 77°F (25°C), swimming can be unpleasant even with relatively high water temperatures.

** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Lake Totak (Totak) in Telemark is a deep, clear mountain reservoir, and its water temperature reflects its altitude and depth. Typical seasonal surface temperatures range from about 4–10 °C (39–50 °F) in late spring and early summer to roughly 10–16 °C (50–61 °F) in the warmest weeks of July and August. By autumn the surface usually cools to around 4–8 °C (39–46 °F), and in winter the lake often lies near freezing, about 0 °C (32 °F), with ice cover common in the coldest months. Because Totak is deep, thermocline effects mean deeper water stays much colder year-round than the surface temperatures suggest.
Swimming in Totak is generally possible and not universally prohibited; Norway’s access traditions allow bathing along natural shorelines, but there are practical and safety reasons for caution. The lake serves as a regulated reservoir with variable water levels and infrastructure related to hydroelectric operations, so areas near dams, intakes or steep drop-offs can be dangerous and may be restricted by signs. Cold water temperatures even in summer can cause rapid hypothermia, so many visitors use short swims, wetsuits or stay near the shore. Observing local signage and avoiding regulated installations makes recreational swimming feasible but requires awareness of the conditions.
