Ada Ciganlija, located in Belgrade, Serbia, is an artificial lake formed from a section of the Sava River and surrounded by popular recreational areas. The lake’s shallow depth allows it to warm up quickly during the spring and summer months. After the cold winter, water temperatures begin to rise in April, reaching around 12–15 °C (54–59 °F). By June, the water warms to 20–23 °C (68–73 °F), and in July and August, it often reaches 25–27 °C (77–81 °F), occasionally even higher during heatwaves. In autumn, temperatures gradually fall below 18 °C (64 °F) in September and 10 °C (50 °F) in October, before cooling further as winter approaches.
Swimming in Ada Ciganlija is officially allowed and very popular among locals and tourists. The water quality is regularly monitored and usually meets safety standards for bathing. The wide beaches and lifeguard services make it one of the safest and most accessible urban swimming areas in the Balkans. The lake’s calm and clean waters attract swimmers, kayakers, and rowers throughout the warm season. While swimming outside summer months is less common due to lower temperatures, during midsummer, Ada Ciganlija offers ideal conditions for outdoor recreation and relaxation.
