Location & Local Information
Višegrad, located in eastern Bosnia and Herzegovina, lies on the banks of the Drina River, one of the country’s most famous and scenic waterways. The Drina is formed from mountain streams and reservoirs, which gives it a clear but cool character. In winter, the river’s temperature drops to around 3–6°C, while in spring it gradually rises to 10–14°C. During the summer, particularly in July and August, the water warms to 18–22°C in calmer sections. In autumn, it cools again to 10–15°C as the air temperature decreases.
Swimming in the Drina near Višegrad is possible during the summer, though the water remains refreshing and somewhat cold due to its mountain origin. The current can be strong in some areas, so swimming is recommended only in designated or calmer zones. Locals often swim near the town’s riverbanks or small beaches where the flow is gentler.
