Location & Local Information
Foča is situated on the upper course of the Drina River, one of the most beautiful and cleanest rivers in the Balkans. The Drina in this area has a strong flow and a distinctly mountain character, with water that stays cold for most of the year. In winter, the temperature drops to around 4–6 °C, while in summer it usually ranges between 15–19 °C, depending on the weather and the amount of meltwater from the surrounding mountains. Even in the warmest months, the river remains noticeably cooler than most lowland rivers, which makes it refreshing but also demanding for swimmers.
Swimming in the Drina near Foča is allowed and popular among locals during July and August, particularly in calmer parts and small natural bays. However, due to the river’s powerful current and low temperature, caution is necessary. Many people prefer short dips rather than long swims. The area is also known for rafting and kayaking, attracting visitors who appreciate both adventure and the pristine nature surrounding the Drina’s turquoise waters.
