Location & Local Information
Sjenica, located in southwestern Serbia on the high Pešter Plateau, is known for its cold climate and the scenic Uvac River that flows through deep canyons and the Uvac Reservoir. Due to the area’s altitude and cool weather, the water in the Uvac River remains cold for most of the year. In spring, temperatures usually range from 6 to 12 °C, while in summer they reach 16–20 °C in calmer sections of the river and reservoir. During autumn, the water cools again to 10–14 °C, and in winter it can fall below 4 °C, with parts of the surface sometimes freezing. These low temperatures reflect the mountainous origin and limited solar warming.
Swimming in the Uvac River near Sjenica is not officially organized but can be possible in certain reservoir areas during warm summer days. Because of the cold and often unpredictable water, swimming is recommended only for experienced swimmers. Most visitors prefer boat tours or observation points above the river’s famous meanders. The beauty of Uvac, with its pristine waters and nesting griffon vultures, attracts nature lovers rather than casual bathers.
