Pale, located in the eastern part of Bosnia and Herzegovina near Sarajevo, lies in a mountainous area where the Miljacka River has its upper course. The river originates from cold mountain springs, so its water remains quite cool throughout the year. In winter, the temperature of the Miljacka is usually between 2 and 5°C, while in spring it rises to around 8–12°C as snow begins to melt. During summer, the water can reach 16–20°C in calmer sections, though it often remains lower in shaded or fast-flowing areas. In autumn, it cools again to 10–14°C.
Swimming in the Miljacka River near Pale is possible but not common. The water is clean in its upper course, but it is cold and the current can be strong in some sections, making swimming suitable only for short and cautious dips. Locals occasionally swim or cool off during the warmest days, but the river is generally better known for its scenic landscapes and natural beauty than for recreation.
