Location & Local Information
Prijepolje is a town in southwestern Serbia situated on the banks of the Lim River, which is known for its relatively cold and fast-flowing waters as it descends from the mountains. Swimming in the Lim is generally undertaken by locals during the height of summer, often in designated, calmer bends or managed river beaches near the town. However, the river's high velocity and rapidly fluctuating water levels, particularly after rainfall or due to dam operations upstream, mean that swimming can be hazardous and is not officially regulated or consistently monitored, requiring extreme caution.
The Lim River's mountainous source ensures that its water temperature remains fresh and cool throughout the year. In the winter months, from approximately November to March, the temperature is very low, ranging from 2∘C to 7∘C, which is far too cold for swimming and often leads to icy banks. Even in the peak summer period, July and August, the water only warms up moderately, typically reaching a range of 18∘C to 21∘C. This temperature offers a highly refreshing, but generally bracing, swimming experience suitable mainly for a quick dip on hot days.
