Location & Local Information
Pljevlja is a town in northern Montenegro, located near the source area of the famous Tara River, often called the Tear of Europe due to its incredible clarity and purity. The Tara River is a swift, cold mountain river, and its water temperature is consistently low throughout the year. For most of the year, particularly from October to May, the temperature hovers between a very cold 5∘C and 8∘C, making casual swimming generally not advisable and potentially dangerous due to the risk of cold shock.
While swimming is technically not forbidden, it is not a recommended activity due to the extremely low temperature and strong currents, especially in the spring with snowmelt. Even in the peak of summer, July and August, the water only warms up to a maximum of about 11∘C to 13∘C in the lower sections of the canyon. Short, refreshing dips are sometimes taken during organized rafting tours, for which participants typically wear protective neoprene suits to mitigate the cold.
