The Gulf of Finland is a shallow, brackish arm of the Baltic Sea whose surface temperatures vary strongly with the seasons and local conditions. In winter the surface typically ranges from about -1°C to 3°C, and parts of the gulf commonly freeze over, especially in the eastern and northern sections. During spring the water warms from near freezing to roughly 0°C–10°C as ice melts and the sun strengthens. Summer surface temperatures usually lie between about 12°C and 20°C, with sheltered bays and shallow coastal waters occasionally reaching 22°C–24°C during strong heatwaves. In autumn the temperature falls again, commonly ranging from 5°C to 12°C as cooling and mixing resume. Nearshore areas warm and cool faster than the open gulf, so local readings can differ from these general ranges.
Swimming Conditions
Swimming in the Gulf of Finland is allowed and is a popular summertime activity along many beaches when authorities judge bathing water quality to be acceptable. Most public beaches are open for swimming in the warmer months because surface temperatures often reach comfortable levels for bathing and lifeguards or signage are provided. In winter ordinary swimming is unsafe because surface water is near freezing and ice cover can present hazards; nevertheless, ice swimming and winter bathing are practiced by enthusiasts with specific safety measures, support and equipment. Visitors should always check current local temperatures, water-quality advisories, beach opening status and follow safety guidance, since shallow brackish conditions, currents, shipping lanes and sudden temperature changes can affect comfort and risk.
