Black Sea Water Temperature Today & Regional Overview
We find every place where you can swim and show you the water temperature there today and throughout the year.
Current Water Temperature
The water temperature in the Black Sea today ranges from 48°F (Odesa, Ukraine) to 53°F (Sokhumi, Georgia).
As of today, the minimum water temperature in the Black Sea ranges from 47°F (8°C) to 50°F (10°C). This is still cool water, suitable only for experienced swimmers or those accustomed to cold water. Swimming in such conditions is possible, but not recommended for prolonged periods. Extra caution should be taken during extended exposure, as the cold water can cause heat loss and lead to hypothermia. For added comfort, special clothing can be used.
It is important to note that these swimming tips and recommendations apply only in good weather. When the air temperature is below 68°F (20°C), and sometimes even below 77°F (25°C), swimming can be unpleasant even with relatively high water temperatures.

The Black Sea displays notable seasonal and regional variation in surface temperature. In winter typical values range from about 6°C along the northern coasts to roughly 10–12°C farther south. Spring brings a steady rise, with many areas warming from around 8°C up to 15–18°C by late spring. Summer is the warmest season: surface temperatures commonly reach 20–24°C along the northern and central shores and can climb to 25–28°C along the Turkish and southeastern coasts. In autumn the sea cools again, with surface readings typically falling to the 12–20°C band depending on latitude and exposure. Deeper waters remain much colder year-round and are strongly stratified, so reported surface temperatures are the most relevant for swimmers.
Swimming Conditions
Swimming in the Black Sea is widely practiced and generally allowed where beaches are open and local authorities permit access. Recreational bathing is most comfortable and common during the summer months when surface temperatures are above about 20°C. Outside that period, water below about 15°C is chilly for casual swimmers, though some hardy individuals or organized winter swimmers continue to enter colder water. Local closures or advisories can be issued for reasons such as poor water quality, strong currents, storm conditions or jellyfish blooms, so swimmers should follow beach signage and local guidance even though there is no blanket prohibition on swimming in the Black Sea.
