The Trebišnjica River, running through Trebinje in Herzegovina, is one of the world's longest sinking rivers, characterized by its karst environment and hydro-power utilization. The river's original cold nature is influenced by the surrounding reservoirs (like Bileća Lake). In winter, the water is cool, generally maintaining temperatures between 12∘C and 14∘C near Trebinje, rarely freezing. However, during the summer, the wide, slower sections near the city allow the surface water to warm significantly, commonly reaching a pleasant range of 22∘C to 26∘C in July and August.
Swimming in the Trebišnjica River is a very popular and culturally accepted summer activity in Trebinje. Due to the river's calm flow and clean water quality—often officially monitored and rated as excellent, especially in controlled areas—it is considered a safe destination for public recreation.
