The Tara River, often called the “Tear of Europe,” flows through northern Montenegro and forms part of the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina. It runs through the Tara Canyon, one of the deepest in the world, surrounded by dense forests and limestone cliffs. The river originates in the mountains of Durmitor, which keeps its water cold and crystal clear throughout the year. In spring, temperatures range from 6 to 10 °C, while in summer they reach 12–17 °C. In autumn, the water cools to 8–13 °C, and in winter it drops below 5 °C. The Tara is famous for its purity and emerald-blue color.
Swimming in the Tara River is allowed but not very common due to the cold temperature and strong currents. During July and August, the upper layers of water are slightly warmer, and short, refreshing swims are possible in calmer sections. However, most visitors enjoy rafting, kayaking, and fishing rather than swimming. The combination of cold mountain water and rapid flow makes the Tara better suited for adventure sports than for leisure bathing. Still, its pristine beauty and unspoiled nature make it one of Montenegro’s most valuable natural treasures.
