The Ćehotina River is a major river in the northern part of Montenegro, predominantly flowing through the Pljevlja region before joining the Drina River. Swimming is officially allowed at designated, though few, locations, but it is primarily restricted to the warmer months. The upper course of the river maintains its pristine, cold mountain character, while the lower, more populated sections, especially near the town of Pljevlja, have historically faced challenges with water quality, which can occasionally affect swimming safety.
The seasonal water temperature range of the Ćehotina is typical for a Balkan mountain river, though with some influence from its lower elevation flow. In winter, from December to February, the water is near freezing, ranging from approximately 4∘C to 8∘C. During the summer, particularly in July and August, the surface temperature in the calmer, shallower parts of the river can rise to more comfortable levels, generally between 18∘C and 22∘C, making for refreshing summer bathing, especially in the upstream sections.
