** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

The River Ure flows through the beautiful landscape of Wensleydale in the Yorkshire Dales, but its water temperature remains decidedly cool throughout the year due to its upland source. Seasonal variations see the water at its coldest during the winter months, typically hovering between 3 and 7∘C (37 and 45∘F). Even in the height of summer, the Ure rarely becomes genuinely warm, with temperatures generally peaking between 14 and 18∘C (57 and 64∘F), making wild swimming a pursuit only for the hardy.
Despite the scenic allure of spots like Aysgarth Falls, swimming in the River Ure is strongly advised against, and the river is not a designated bathing water. Recent citizen science testing has consistently detected dangerously high levels of bacterial contamination, including E. coli, which can cause serious illness. The pollution stems from various sources, including sewage discharges and agricultural runoff, making the water unsafe for human and pet contact, especially after rainfall. Visitors to the area should instead enjoy local landmarks such as Bolton Castle and the spectacular Aysgarth Falls from the safety of the banks, or explore the wider Yorkshire Dales National Park.
