** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

The River Irwell, flowing through Greater Manchester and Lancashire before joining the River Mersey, is one of northwest England’s most urban but steadily improving waterways. Its temperature reflects the region’s temperate, maritime climate and the balance between upland sources and city sections. In winter, the Irwell usually measures between 4 and 6°C (39–43°F), staying cold and fast-moving after rainfall. By spring, it warms gradually to around 8–10°C (46–50°F). During midsummer, particularly in July and August, the water can reach 16–18°C (61–64°F) in sheltered areas, though shaded or canal-fed sections remain cooler. As autumn approaches, temperatures fall again to about 10–12°C (50–54°F), keeping a steady, refreshing feel through most of the year.
Swimming in the River Irwell is permitted but best suited to experienced wild swimmers familiar with urban rivers. Water quality has improved in recent decades, yet caution is still needed because of uneven depths and occasional strong currents. Many prefer to enjoy the river from its paths and green spaces, such as Peel Park and Clifton Country Park, where access to the water is easy but safe. The Irwell also passes cultural and historic landmarks through Salford and Manchester, offering a mix of natural recovery and industrial heritage along its winding course.
