*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

The River Eden, one of northern England’s most scenic rivers, rises in the limestone hills of Mallerstang and flows north through Cumbria before reaching the Solway Firth. Its cool, clear waters reflect the region’s upland climate and the influence of mountain streams that feed it year-round. In winter, the river typically measures around 3–5°C (37–41°F), remaining cold and swift after rainfall. By spring, it begins to warm slightly to 8–10°C (46–50°F), while in midsummer—particularly during July and August—the Eden can reach 15–17°C (59–63°F) in calmer stretches and pools. As autumn approaches, the temperature gradually cools again to around 10–12°C (50–54°F), keeping a fresh, invigorating feel that defines much of the year.
Swimming in the River Eden is allowed and enjoyed by wild swimmers, particularly in the summer months when water levels are lower and currents are gentle. The river’s clean, flowing water makes it suitable for open-water swimming, though caution is advised near deeper pools and rapids. Many popular swimming spots are found near Appleby and Armathwaite, where the landscape is peaceful and accessible. Beyond swimming, the Eden Valley offers opportunities for walking, canoeing, and wildlife watching, with nearby attractions such as Carlisle Castle and the rolling hills of the North Pennines adding to its natural appeal.
