*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

The River Tees, flowing from the Pennine Hills to the North Sea, is one of northern England’s most striking and varied rivers. It begins as a fast upland stream and broadens into a calm, meandering river as it nears the coast. The Tees remains relatively cool throughout the year, shaped by the northern climate and mountain-fed sources. In winter, water temperatures usually range from 2 to 5°C (36–41°F), staying cold and clear. By spring, the river warms to around 8–10°C (46–50°F). During midsummer, especially in July and August, the water can reach 15–17°C (59–63°F) in sheltered lower stretches, while the upland sections stay several degrees cooler. As autumn approaches, it gradually cools again to about 9–11°C (48–52°F), maintaining a refreshing character year-round.
Swimming in the River Tees is allowed and popular among wild swimmers, particularly in the upper and middle reaches where the water is clean and scenic. Calm pools below waterfalls, such as at High Force and Low Force, are favourite spots during summer, though caution is essential due to slippery rocks and sudden depth changes. The Tees Valley also offers beautiful walking and cycling routes, with nearby attractions including Teesdale’s waterfalls, Barnard Castle, and the coastal views near Teesmouth.
