** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

The River Ouse, flowing through North Yorkshire and into the Humber Estuary, is one of northern England’s most significant waterways. Its wide and slow-moving course reflects the region’s cool but temperate climate. In winter, the Ouse typically remains between 4 and 6°C (39–43°F), cold and often swollen from seasonal rainfall. As spring progresses, the water warms gradually to around 9–12°C (48–54°F). During midsummer, particularly in July and August, temperatures can reach 17–20°C (63–68°F), though shaded or deeper areas tend to stay cooler. In early autumn, the river cools again to about 12–14°C (54–57°F), keeping a refreshing quality that lasts until the colder months return.
Swimming in the River Ouse is possible and occasionally practiced, especially in rural stretches away from heavy boat traffic, but it requires caution. The river’s slow flow can conceal deep pools, strong undercurrents, and fluctuating water levels after rain. Many local swimmers choose calm spots on warm days or take part in organized open-water events. For those preferring to stay dry, the Ouse offers scenic walking and boating opportunities, particularly around York and Naburn. The riverbanks are lined with historic landmarks, bridges, and parks, providing a peaceful natural backdrop to explore one of Yorkshire’s defining waterways.
