*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

The River Wharfe, flowing through the Yorkshire Dales and into the Ouse, is one of northern England’s most scenic and popular rivers for outdoor recreation. Its temperature reflects the upland climate of Yorkshire, with cool, clear water that changes steadily through the seasons. In winter, the Wharfe usually stays between 3 and 5°C (37–41°F), remaining cold and fast-flowing from rainfall and snowmelt. By spring, it warms gradually to around 8–10°C (46–50°F). During midsummer—especially in July and August—the water can reach 15–18°C (59–64°F) in calmer, sunlit pools, while higher stretches in the Dales remain a few degrees cooler. As autumn returns, the temperature drops again to about 9–11°C (48–52°F), keeping a fresh, invigorating quality throughout most of the year.
Swimming in the River Wharfe is allowed and widely enjoyed, particularly in cleaner and calmer sections. Areas near Ilkley, Bolton Abbey, and Burnsall are well known for wild swimming thanks to clear water and easy access. The river’s current is usually gentle in summer but can become strong after rain, so care is always recommended. Beyond swimming, the Wharfe Valley offers beautiful walking routes, fishing spots, and historic attractions such as Bolton Priory and the limestone landscapes of the Yorkshire Dales National Park.
