Water Temperature: Daily Trends, Historical Records, and Forecast

⚠️ As of today, the minimum water temperature ranges from 60°F (15°C) to 65°F (18°C). The water is comfortable for most people, making it an ideal range for water sports enthusiasts. The temperature does not cause significant discomfort, and swimming will be pleasant for the majority. However, it's important to remember that prolonged exposure to the water can still lead to cooling, so it's essential to monitor the time spent in the water, especially for children or elderly people. It is important to note that these swimming tips and recommendations apply only in good weather. When the air temperature is below 68°F (20°C), and sometimes even below 77°F (25°C), swimming can be unpleasant even with relatively high water temperatures.

*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast

Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.

Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

The River Wear flows through County Durham and Sunderland before reaching the North Sea, winding through a landscape of wooded valleys and historic towns. Its temperature reflects the cool, temperate climate of northeast England, with noticeable seasonal variation. In winter, the Wear usually remains between 3 and 5°C (37–41°F), staying cold and fast-moving from rainfall and upland runoff. By spring, it gradually warms to around 8–10°C (46–50°F). During midsummer—especially in July and August—the water can reach 15–17°C (59–63°F) in calm and shallow stretches, though shaded or upland sections remain cooler. As autumn returns, it cools again to about 9–11°C (48–52°F), keeping a fresh and steady character throughout the year.

Swimming in the River Wear is allowed and has become increasingly popular as water quality has improved. The calmer areas around Durham and Chester-le-Street are often used by wild swimmers in summer, offering scenic surroundings and relatively gentle currents. However, care is needed after rain, when the river can rise quickly. The Wear is also a focus for rowing and riverside walks, giving residents and visitors many ways to enjoy the water. Nearby attractions include Durham Cathedral and Castle, Roker Beach, and the wooded trails that follow the Wear Valley through the county.
