The Ogre River, flowing through the town of Ogre in central Latvia, experiences marked seasonal changes in water temperature. In winter the river is close to freezing, commonly around 0 °C (32 °F) and often covered by ice for weeks. During spring the water warms gradually, typically ranging from about 1–10 °C (34–50 °F) as snowmelt and rainfall raise flow and lower temperature variability. Summer is the warmest period for the river, with surface temperatures commonly between 16–22 °C (61–72 °F) on sunny, calm stretches, though cooler pockets persist in shaded or fast-flowing sections. In autumn temperatures fall again to roughly 6–12 °C (43–54 °F) before the onset of freeze-up.
Swimming in the Ogre River is generally permitted, but opportunities are conditional. Local residents often swim in summer when temperatures reach comfortable levels and water quality is monitored at designated bathing spots. Outside of those times swimmers should be cautious: currents, variable depth, submerged obstacles and colder temperatures in spring and autumn increase risk of hypothermia or cold-water shock, while winter ice makes swimming hazardous.
