** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years

*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast

Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.

Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

The Daugava is a large, slow-moving river through Latvia whose water temperature varies markedly with the seasons. In winter (December–February) the river often approaches freezing, typically around 0–4 °C (32–39 °F) and can be ice-covered in many stretches. In spring (March–May) temperatures climb to roughly 4–12 °C (39–54 °F) as ice melts and runoff cools the flow. Summer (June–August) brings the warmest conditions, with typical surface temperatures in open, shallower areas near 16–22 °C (61–72 °F), though sheltered bays or slow backwaters can be slightly warmer. In autumn (September–November) the water cools again to roughly 6–14 °C (43–57 °F), depending on air temperatures and recent rainfall.

Swimming in the Daugava is permitted in many places, but it is not uniformly advisable everywhere. Designated bathing spots and river beaches are monitored for safety and water quality and are the safest choices; elsewhere strong currents, variable depths, boat traffic, submerged hazards and occasional pollution can make swimming risky. In winter swimming is generally restricted because of ice and hypothermia risk. Local signage and authorities should be consulted before entering the water, and swimmers should favor supervised, tested locations during the warm months.
