Location & Local Information
The Lakavica River flows through the central-eastern part of North Macedonia, passing near the towns of Štip and Radoviš. It is a tributary of the Bregalnica River and has a moderate continental climate influence. The river’s water is generally clear, with temperature variations depending on the season and rainfall. In winter, the water cools to about 3–6 °C, while in summer it warms to 20–24 °C, especially in shallower and calmer sections. Its flow is strongest during spring due to snowmelt, while in late summer it becomes slower and warmer, creating favorable conditions for limited recreation.
Swimming in the Lakavica River is allowed, though it is more popular for short refreshment rather than extended swimming. Locals sometimes cool off in accessible areas during July and August, when the water temperature is most comfortable. However, because the river has variable depth and flow, caution is recommended. The banks are often used for fishing, picnicking, and enjoying the peaceful natural surroundings. The Lakavica represents a small but pleasant natural feature in this part of the country.
