Swimming in such conditions is possible, but for most people, the time spent in the water should be limited to avoid hypothermia. Even experienced swimmers may feel discomfort if they stay in the water for too long. To improve comfort and safety, a wetsuit can be used. It is important to note that these swimming tips and recommendations apply only in good weather. When the air temperature is below 68°F (20°C), and sometimes even below 77°F (25°C), swimming can be unpleasant even with relatively high water temperatures.

Location & Local Information
Loch Maree, set against the dramatic backdrop of the Torridon mountains in the Scottish Highlands, is an incredibly picturesque location but a very cold one for swimming. Due to its size and high latitude, the water maintains low temperatures all year. In the winter, the water is close to freezing, typically around 4∘C to 6∘C (39∘F to 43∘F). Even in the height of summer, the surface temperature rarely exceeds 12∘C (54∘F), with deeper areas remaining significantly colder.
As with most of Scotland's lochs, swimming is generally allowed under the Scottish Outdoor Access Code's right to roam, provided it's done responsibly. However, it is strictly wild swimming, and the extreme cold carries a high risk of cold water shock and hypothermia, necessitating caution and often a wetsuit. Visitors must also be aware of the fragile ecosystem, particularly the rare Black-throated Divers nesting on the loch's many wooded islands. The nearby Beinn Eighe National Nature Reserve offers fantastic opportunities for hiking and wildlife spotting.
