Loch Achonachie, a man-made reservoir in the Scottish Highlands near Contin, offers opportunities for wild swimming, which is permitted under Scotland's open access rights. Being a Highland loch and part of a hydro-electric scheme, the water is consistently cold. Seasonal temperatures in such inland waters typically range from near-freezing in winter, around 3∘C to 5∘C (37∘F to 41∘F), to a maximum of about 12∘C to 15∘C (54∘F to 59∘F) during the warmest summer months.
Swimmers must be fully aware of the cold water shock risk, especially when water levels can change due to the dam system. While the loch offers beautiful scenery for a bracing dip, swimmers should proceed with extreme caution and wear appropriate safety gear. The area is close to numerous Highland attractions, including the Falls of Rogie, a spectacular waterfall and viewing platform, and provides easy access to exploring the scenic Black Isle peninsula.
