Loch Naver is a large, elongated loch located in the remote Sutherland region of the Scottish Highlands, feeding the famous salmon river of the same name. Due to its northern location and significant size and depth, its water temperatures remain consistently cold throughout the year. In winter, the water is frigid, dropping to between 3∘C and 6∘C (37∘F to 43∘F), with ice cover possible near the edges. Even at its warmest, in late summer, the surface temperatures typically only peak around 12∘C to 15∘C (54∘F to 59∘F).
Swimming is permitted under the general access rights afforded by the Scottish Outdoor Access Code, meaning there are no outright bans on wild swimming. However, due to the cold temperatures, depth, and isolation of the loch, swimming is strongly advised only for experienced individuals who are prepared for cold water shock and carry appropriate safety gear. The area is highly regarded for its natural beauty and history; it lies in the ancient area of Strathnaver and offers excellent opportunities for hiking and brown trout fishing, with the historic Skelp Rock being a notable landmark on its shoreline.
