** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Lake Willoughby is a deep, glacially carved lake whose clarity and depth keep its water relatively cool year-round. Seasonal surface temperatures typically run roughly 35–55°F (2–13°C) in spring, about 60–72°F (15–22°C) during the warmest summer months, and then decline to around 50–65°F (10–18°C) in early fall before falling again to near freezing, about 32–40°F (0–4°C), through winter when ice cover is common. Because the lake is very deep, temperatures drop quickly with depth: below the surface layer the water remains much colder even in summer, so the warm band for comfortable swimming is usually shallow and limited to the sunniest, calm days.
Swimming is allowed and people do enter the lake, especially in summer when surface warmth is at its peak, but the conditions require caution. The combination of cold water, steep drop-offs, and unpredictable currents can lead to cold shock and rapid loss of body heat, so swimmers should be conservative about distance from shore, be aware that warm surface conditions do not extend far downward, and use flotation or a wetsuit if venturing farther out. In winter the lake is often frozen and ice swimming poses significant hazards, so it is generally not advisable except for experienced, well-prepared individuals.
