Lake Massawippi, located in the Eastern Townships of southern Quebec near the towns of Ayer’s Cliff and North Hatley, is a deep freshwater lake known for its clear water and scenic surroundings. The lake’s depth and sheltered valleys influence how it warms throughout the year. In early spring, after the ice melts in April, surface temperatures remain cold, averaging around 39–45°F (4–7°C). By late May and June, the water begins to warm steadily to about 52–61°F (11–16°C). During midsummer, from July through August, Lake Massawippi typically reaches its warmest period, with surface temperatures between 68–75°F (20–24°C) in shallow areas, while deeper water remains cooler at around 59–63°F (15–17°C). As autumn approaches, the temperature gradually drops again below 57°F (14°C) by late September.
Swimming in Lake Massawippi is allowed and very popular during the summer season. The lake’s clean, calm water and sandy beaches make it an excellent spot for families and recreational swimmers. Designated swimming areas near Ayer’s Cliff and North Hatley provide safe and accessible entry points. During midsummer, the water becomes comfortably warm for extended swimming and boating, while the surrounding landscape offers a relaxing environment. The best time for swimming is from late June to early September, when both air and water temperatures are ideal for outdoor recreation.
