** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Lake Francis, a reservoir in northern New Hampshire, tends to run cooler than more southerly lakes because of its latitude, depth and river-fed character. Surface temperatures typically climb into the 60s to low 70s °F in the warmest weeks of summer (about 16–22 °C), while deeper water remains substantially cooler, often in the mid‑40s to mid‑50s °F (7–13 °C) even on hot days. Spring and early summer bring a gradual rise from chilly conditions—roughly 35–55 °F (2–13 °C)—and by fall the surface cools back toward the 50s °F (10–15 °C). In winter the lake commonly freezes and surface temperatures sit at or near 32 °F (0 °C) under ice.
Recreational swimming is possible at Lake Francis, but conditions and facilities are limited. There are areas where people enter the water from shore or boats, yet there are few if any staffed beaches or lifeguards, and the cold water and sudden temperature changes present real risks such as cold shock and hypothermia. Boat traffic, currents near the dam and variable depths also affect safety. Because of these factors, most swimmers choose calm, sheltered spots in summer and take precautions—short exposure times, a buddy system and a wetsuit if venturing into cooler or deeper water.
