** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Lake Olson, like many inland lakes in Minnesota, experiences strong seasonal swings in water temperature. In winter the surface is typically at or around freezing, about 32°F (0°C), and the lake is often ice-covered. In spring the water gradually warms from roughly the mid‑30s to mid‑50s Fahrenheit (2–13°C) as ice-out progresses. Summer months bring the warmest surface temperatures, commonly in the mid‑60s to low‑80s °F (18–27°C) on warm, shallow areas; deeper water remains cooler below the thermocline. In fall the surface cools again, often ranging from the low‑40s to around 60°F (4–16°C) before the lake returns to ice conditions.
Swimming is generally possible during the ice‑free months when water temperatures are comfortable, but whether it is permitted at a particular shoreline depends on local access, signage and water quality advisories. Public beaches and maintained shorelines are the usual places for safe swimming; unmonitored areas can present hazards such as steep drop‑offs, aquatic vegetation, or sudden cold pockets. In winter the lake is not suitable for normal swimming because of ice and cold‑water risks, though some people practice ice dipping with precautions. Always check local guidance, recent water quality reports and use appropriate safety measures before entering the water.
