White Bear Lake in Minnesota experiences a wide range of water temperatures through the year. In early spring the lake is cold, often in the low 40s to mid 50s °F (about 4–13 °C) as ice melts and runoff cools surface waters. By midsummer surface temperatures commonly reach the upper 60s to high 70s °F, roughly 20–26 °C, and can occasionally approach 80 °F (27 °C) during heat spells. In the fall the water cools back into the 50s and low 60s °F (10–17 °C), while winter typically brings surface ice and temperatures at or near freezing (32 °F / 0 °C), making open-water conditions uncommon.
Swimming in White Bear Lake is possible and is generally permitted at public and private shoreline areas when conditions are safe. Designated beaches and waterfronts are used for recreation in the warmer months, but swimmers should heed local advisories because water quality, cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) blooms, or hazardous conditions can temporarily close or recommend avoiding swimming.
