Attean Pond in north-central Maine experiences marked seasonal shifts in water temperature. In winter the surface usually sits at or near freezing, about 32°F (0°C), and the pond commonly freezes over. Spring temperatures rise from roughly the mid-30s to around 60°F (2–16°C) as ice melts and the surface warms. During summer the surface typically reaches the mid-60s to mid-70s °F, roughly 18–24°C, with shallow bays occasionally warming into the upper 70s °F (about 25–26°C) on hot, calm days. In fall the water cools back down toward the 40s–60°F range (4–16°C). Because the pond stratifies, deeper water remains much colder year-round, often near 40°F (4–5°C), even when surface temperatures are comfortable.
