Location & Local Information
The Kuchurhan Reservoir, located on the border between Ukraine and Moldova in the Odesa region, is a large artificial lake created on the Kuchurhan River. Because it serves as a cooling water body for a nearby power plant, the temperature of the water can vary significantly depending on the location and season. In summer, most of the reservoir warms up to 23–27°C, but near the discharge zones of the power plant the water may stay a few degrees warmer even in spring or autumn. This gives the reservoir a longer “swimming season” than natural lakes in the area.
Swimming in the Kuchurhan Reservoir is quite common among locals, especially near the Ukrainian shore around the town of Lymanske. The water is generally calm, with gentle slopes and sandy or gravelly sections suitable for bathing. However, some parts of the lake closer to industrial facilities or with muddy bottoms are less suitable for recreation. In general, the reservoir offers good conditions for swimming in summer, but it’s worth choosing cleaner, natural-looking spots away from technical zones.
