Khadzhibey Estuary, located to the northwest of Odesa, is one of the unique saline bodies of water on the Black Sea coast, separated from the sea by a sand spit. Due to the fact that the estuary is relatively shallow (average depth around 2.5 meters, although the maximum reaches 15 meters) and is situated in a southern, hot climatic zone, its water warms up very quickly in the summer. In July and August, the water temperature in the Khadzhibey Estuary commonly reaches a very comfortable +24 to +27∘C, providing ideal conditions for prolonged and enjoyable swimming.
Swimming opportunities at the Khadzhibey Estuary are closely linked to its therapeutic potential. The body of water is famous for its mineral muds and brine, which possess healing properties and are used for wellness, particularly at local sanatoriums and mud baths. Swimming in the estuary is viewed not only as recreation but also as a health procedure. However, it should be considered that due to the high mineralization and periodic blooming of the water in late summer, the visual appearance of the water may not always meet the ideal.
