** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Howard Prairie Lake is a mountain reservoir, so water temperatures tend to stay cool even in summer. Typical seasonal surface temperatures run roughly 32–40°F (0–4°C) in winter when ice or near-ice conditions can occur; about 40–55°F (4–13°C) in spring as snowmelt and runoff dominate; roughly 60–70°F (15.5–21°C) in the warmest part of summer at the surface on sunny days; and around 45–60°F (7–15.5°C) in fall as the lake cools. These are approximate ranges and actual readings vary with weather, depth, and inflows; deeper water remains colder year-round.
Swimming is generally permitted at Howard Prairie because the lake is managed as a multiuse recreation reservoir, but it is not regularly staffed with lifeguards and conditions can change quickly. Cold water temperatures even in summer increase the risk of cold-water shock and fatigue, and boat traffic, submerged hazards, and occasional algal or water-quality advisories can further limit safe swimming. Visitors should swim only in designated recreation areas when available, check current local advisories, wear a personal flotation device if conditions warrant, and exercise caution because official restrictions or safety notices may be posted at the site.
