** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Applegate Lake is a reservoir whose surface waters vary with the seasons. In summer the surface commonly warms into the mid‑60s to mid‑70s °F (about 18–24 °C), and in shallow, sun‑exposed coves can sometimes reach the high‑70s °F (around 25–26 °C). During spring and fall the lake is noticeably cooler, with surface temperatures often in the 50s to low 60s °F (roughly 10–16 °C). In winter the water drops further, frequently sitting around the low 40s to mid‑40s °F (about 4–7 °C). These figures refer mostly to surface conditions; deeper water stays considerably colder year‑round and a thermocline can produce a sharp drop in temperature a few meters down.
Swimming is generally permitted at Applegate Lake and the area is used for recreational swimming, boating and shoreline activities, but it comes with safety caveats. The relatively cool temperatures outside of peak summer months raise the risk of cold shock and hypothermia, and lakeside facilities rarely have lifeguards, so swimmers should be cautious. Boat traffic, sudden changes in depth, and colder subsurface layers are additional hazards to consider. Visitors should choose designated day‑use or beach areas, monitor conditions, wear a personal flotation device when appropriate, and avoid extended exposure in chillier seasons.
