** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Aspen Lake in southern Oregon is a shallow, high-desert lake whose surface waters show pronounced seasonal swings. Typical winter surface temperatures commonly sit near freezing, roughly 32–40°F (0–4°C). In spring the lake gradually warms to about 40–55°F (4–13°C). Peak warmth usually occurs in midsummer, when surface readings often reach the mid-60s to around 70°F (18–21°C) on warm, calm days; deeper and shaded areas remain notably cooler. By autumn the water cools again into the 40s–50s°F (4–12°C). These figures are approximate and can vary with air temperature, wind, solar exposure and water depth; surface temperatures are warmer than subsurface layers, which remain chilly year-round.
Swimming at Aspen Lake is generally permitted because it is a public waterbody, but it is not a traditional swimming beach and many visitors find the water colder than expected. The relatively low summer maxima and rapid cooling can create discomfort and increase the risk of cold-water shock or hypothermia during prolonged immersion. Shoreline conditions are often marshy and there are no staffed lifeguards at informal access points, so recreational use is commonly limited to brief dips, wading or boating rather than extended open-water swimming; visitors should exercise caution and check local conditions before entering.
