*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Douglas Lake in northern Michigan experiences a clear seasonal cycle in water temperature. In winter months the surface typically hovers near freezing, roughly 32–40°F (0–4°C) beneath ice. Spring warming brings temperatures up to about 40–60°F (4–16°C) as the lake stratifies. Peak summer conditions from June through August commonly yield comfortable swimming temperatures in the range of about 68–78°F (20–26°C), with occasional warm spells pushing surface readings toward 80°F (27°C). In fall the lake cools again to roughly 50–68°F (10–20°C) as air temperatures drop and mixing returns.
Swimming is generally allowed at Douglas Lake where private and public shorelines provide access, and many residents and visitors swim during the warmer months. Comfortable summer temperatures make recreational swimming popular, while cooler spring and fall water increases the risk of cold shock and reduces endurance. In winter the lake is typically iced over, so regular open-water swimming is not advisable except for experienced, well-prepared ice swimmers taking proper safety precautions. As with any inland lake, local water-quality advisories, underwater vegetation, boat traffic, and posted rules should be checked before entering the water.
