*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Lake Skegemog, like other inland lakes in northern Michigan, shows pronounced seasonal changes in water temperature. In winter the surface typically approaches freezing, around 32°F (0°C) and often stays just above that under ice. Spring thaw brings surface temperatures into the 40s–60s°F (4–16°C) range as the lake mixes and warms. During summer, surface waters commonly reach the mid-70s°F (around 24–26°C) and on warm, calm stretches can climb into the low 80s°F (27–28°C), while deeper or shaded spots remain noticeably cooler. In autumn the lake cools again, passing through the 60s into the 40s°F (15–5°C) before refreezing. Actual temperatures vary by depth, wind, and recent weather.
Swimming in Lake Skegemog is possible and is practiced from public access points and private shorelines when conditions permit, but it is seasonal: ice and near-freezing water make winter swimming unsafe without specialized preparation. Summer surface temperatures are generally comfortable for recreational swimming, although shallow bays can be warmer and support abundant aquatic plants, which some swimmers find unpleasant. As with any lake, water quality advisories, algal bloom notices, posted rules at beaches, and local safety guidance should be checked before entering the water, and swimmers should be mindful of temperature-related risks like cold shock in cooler seasons.
