Water Temperature: Daily Trends, Historical Records, and Forecast
❌ As of today, the minimum water temperature ranges from 47°F (8°C) to 50°F (10°C). This is still cool water, suitable only for experienced swimmers or those accustomed to cold water. Swimming in such conditions is possible, but not recommended for prolonged periods. Extra caution should be taken during extended exposure, as the cold water can cause heat loss and lead to hypothermia. For added comfort, special clothing can be used. It is important to note that these swimming tips and recommendations apply only in good weather. When the air temperature is below 68°F (20°C), and sometimes even below 77°F (25°C), swimming can be unpleasant even with relatively high water temperatures.

** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Elk Lake in northern Michigan is a deep, clear inland lake whose water temperatures vary markedly by season and depth. In spring the surface typically ranges from about 40–55°F (4–13°C) as the water warms after ice-out. During summer, surface temperatures in swim-friendly areas usually rise to the mid-60s to mid-70s°F (18–24°C), although sheltered shallows can be a few degrees warmer. A pronounced thermocline means deeper water stays much colder, often in the 40s–50s°F (4–10°C) even in August. In fall the surface cools back toward the 50s–40s°F (10–4°C), and by winter the lake commonly approaches freezing at or just above 32°F (0°C) and may be ice-covered.
Swimming is generally permitted and commonly undertaken during the warmer months because surface temperatures can be comfortable for recreational use. Cold deep water, rapid temperature changes, and the risk of hypothermia make early- and late-season swims more hazardous, and ice cover in winter effectively prevents safe open-water swimming. Many swimmers use shallow, sun-warmed spots or wetsuits to extend the season, and visitors are advised to be mindful of temperature differences, stay near shore, and follow any local safety guidance.
