*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Otsego Lake in northern Michigan experiences typical temperate-lake seasonal shifts in water temperature. In spring the lake usually runs cool, roughly 40–60°F (4–16°C) as snowmelt and cooler air keep the water chilly. By early to mid-summer surface temperatures commonly rise into the mid-60s to mid-70s °F (18–24°C), with sheltered shallow bays sometimes reaching the upper 70s °F (25–26°C) on warm, calm days. In early fall temperatures decline back toward the 40s–60s °F (4–16°C), and in winter the lake approaches freezing, often 32–39°F (0–4°C) when ice is present. Deeper water remains colder year-round than the warmest surface measurements.
Swimming is generally allowed at Otsego Lake where public access sites or private properties permit recreational use, and it is a common summer activity because the warmer surface temperatures make open-water swimming comfortable. Visitors should obey posted signs, follow local water-quality advisories, and respect private shorelines. Even in summer, cold-water shock and varying depths mean swimmers should use caution; during winter months the lake is typically unsafe for casual swimming because of ice cover and hypothermia risk, and ice activities should only be undertaken with proper safety measures.
